We are creating a conceptual design for a practical stellarator with grid-scale commercial relevance. This requires designing novel concepts for major stellarator components (e.g. high-field magnets and remote maintenance) and building processes to validate engineering feasibility of configurations (performance, manufacturing and operations).
Fusion devices are hugely cross-disciplinary, pushing materials and technologies to their limits. Some key challenges:
Building support structures that can sustain enormous magnetic forces and maintain tight coil alignment tolerances at an affordable fabrication cost;
Exploring robotic reactor maintenance concepts that can ensure high availability of a power plant over a decades-long lifetime;
Designing large scale vacuum and cooling systems that can robustly maintain cryogenic temperatures in superconducting coils;
Integration of engineering feasibility constraints into physics optimization workflows, reducing the cycle time for concept iteration.
We are looking for candidates with experience across a selection of the following:
Rapid component conceptual design exploration and reduced order analysis;
Multi-physics modeling, in particular structural, thermal and electromagnetic analysis;
Evaluation of high level systems concepts, performing trade studies between components;
Prototype device development from concept;
Fusion technology including superconducting magnets, cryogenics, neutronics and fuel cycles.
As part of this team you will:
Explore fundamental system design concepts defining the entire device;
Evaluate engineering feasibility and tradeoffs for key components;
Incorporate new technologies and novel concepts to push fusion to new levels of performance and feasibility;
Collaborate closely with our simulation and optimization team to minimize overall system compromises.
